The Fume Cupboard Testing Company: A New COSHH & TExT Division Led by Expertise

The Fume Testing Company

Maintaining safe laboratory environments, while meeting COSHH requirements, depends on regular inspection and assessment of systems that manage airborne hazards. As demand for reliable compliance support continues to rise, The Fume Cupboard Company Ltd has introduced a new specialist division: The Fume Testing Company. As a result, organisations now have access to a unit dedicated to COSHH Regulation 9 responsibilities, statutory Thorough Examination and Testing (TExT), and wider safety assessments across education, industry and research sectors.

Expert‑Led Fume Safety Services

The division is led by Freddie Waters, who joined the organisation in 2022. In 2025, he completed the BOHS P601 qualification, which equips practitioners to evaluate LEV systems accurately and safely. The programme covers airflow checks, system components and fault identification, as well as the knowledge needed to complete compliant examinations. Because of this training and his hands‑on experience, Freddie provides strong technical leadership.

Why We Created The Fume Testing Company

Increasing demand for dependable compliance support has made a structured approach essential. Therefore, creating a separate division allows us to:

1. Strengthen Technical Oversight

A dedicated lead ensures assessments follow best practice and legal obligations. Under COSHH Regulation 9, engineering controls such as LEV systems must be examined and tested at least every 14 months.

2. Improve Organisation and Efficiency

By separating compliance tasks from installation work, we achieve clearer workflows and quicker service delivery.

3. Modernise Reporting and Records

Updating our data systems improves accuracy, reporting speed and long‑term access to essential documentation.

4. Expand Our Capabilities

With dedicated resources, we can adopt new technology, increase capacity and deliver broader support nationwide.

What Customers Gain

Partnering with The Fume Testing Company offers several key benefits:

  • Faster assessment scheduling
  • Clear, reliable compliance reports
  • Strong alignment with COSHH obligations
  • A team dedicated solely to safety evaluations
  • Better long‑term tracking and record management
  • Scalable support for single or multi‑site organisations

Commitment to Safety and Compliance

This strategic development strengthens our long‑term commitment to laboratory and workplace safety. Thanks to Freddie Waters’ expertise in P601‑based LEV evaluation, customers receive careful, well‑structured examinations carried out with recognised competence.

External COSHH & LEV Guidance

HSE guidance explains that LEV systems must be maintained, inspected and tested regularly to ensure they continue controlling airborne contaminants effectively. During a TExT assessment, a competent examiner inspects system condition, airflow performance and design conformity through visual checks, measurements and verification steps. Comprehensive guidance is available in HSG258: Controlling Airborne Contaminants at Work which describes the full assessment process.
