The Cortex Organics laboratory fit-out showcases a complete, high-specification installation delivered by The Fume Cupboard Company. From the outset, we focused on safety, performance, and efficiency. As a result, the project delivered a modern laboratory environment fully aligned with client requirements and industry standards.
This fitout included advanced fume cupboards, a full VAV extract system, and a coordinated laboratory furniture package. Moreover, every element works together to improve safety, airflow control, and usability.
Cortex Organics Laboratory Fit-Out: Isoflow Senior Fume Cupboards Installation
At the core of this laboratory fit-out, we installed 10 Isoflow Senior fume cupboards, each measuring 1500mm wide. These units provide reliable containment and consistent airflow performance.
Each Isoflow Senior unit includes:
- Toughened glass sash for durability
- Trespa worktop, linings, and baffles for chemical resistance
- VAV 250mm damper for precise airflow control
- Full-width ventilated storage for safe containment
Additionally, each cupboard was specified with:
- AFA4000/E VAV airflow alarm and controller
- Low-energy LED lighting
- Twin switched socket outlets
- Water tap, drip cup, and bottle trap
- Nitrogen valve and outlet

Safety and Performance Considerations
Safety remained a high priority throughout this Cortex Organics laboratory fit-out. Therefore, we designed every system to meet strict operational and compliance requirements.
Each Isoflow Senior fume cupboard includes:
- CO2 fire suppression systems
- Fire switches connected to the building alarm system
We also specified airflow performance carefully. For example:
- 5 cupboards operate at 0.5 m/s
- 3 cupboards operate at 0.4 m/s
- 2 cupboards operate at 0.35 m/s
All units run with a sash height of 500mm. Consequently, they provide consistent containment and efficient airflow control across the laboratory.

Air Handling and VAV Control in the Cortex Organics Laboratory Fit-Out
In addition, this fit-out includes a fully integrated air handling system. This system maintains safe air quality and stable pressure conditions at all times.
Key system features include:
- Roof-mounted air handling unit supplying fresh air
- Factory-fitted controls package for precision management
- Negative pressure of 10 Pascals within the laboratory
Air is drawn in, conditioned, and distributed through a ducted system. Then, a DX cooling coil regulates temperature. Two Mitsubishi Electric condensers support this process.
As a result, the system ensures consistent airflow, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced containment of hazardous substances.

Finally, the Cortex Organics laboratory fit-out includes a complete extraction and furniture package. These elements support both performance and day-to-day usability.
The extraction system features:
- Chemical-resistant PVC ductwork
- Chemical-resistant centrifugal fan
- Single-phase to 3-phase inverter for efficient operation
Meanwhile, the laboratory furniture package includes:
- Freestanding laboratory benches
- Rear bench-mounted storage
- Cast epoxy sink with drainer
- Water-saving lever-operated taps
- China hand wash sink with lever tap
- Single and double under-bench storage units
